Judith Plaskow Travel Grant

About

The Judith Plaskow Travel Grant, funded through donations in honor of the former AAR president’s influential work in Jewish feminism and Plaskow’s enduring legacy in feminist approaches to the study of religion, is awarded annually to a student or independent scholar who is scheduled to present a paper centrally informed by and/or contributing to feminist approaches to the study of religion at the November Annual Meeting. 

The grant awards $500 and complimentary registration to that year’s November Annual Meeting. The grant is awarded on a competitive basis. 

Criteria

  • Current AAR membership at the time of application and throughout the grant period.
  • Current status as a student or independent scholar.
  • Accepted paper presentation for November Annual Meeting that is centrally informed by and/or contributes to feminist approaches to the study of religion.

The Plaskow grant cannot be awarded to an individual who has been awarded an AAR travel grant in the past three years. Applicants cannot be awarded more than one travel grant in a particular year.

How to Apply

Applicants must submit an application form and the required materials through the AAR Grant Application Submission System.

Late, emailed, or incomplete applications and/or required materials cannot be accepted.

Applicants must provide the following information on the application form:

  • Expiration date of current AAR membership (click here to log into your member profile and view the expiration date)
  • Description of current membership status
  • Summary Statement of accepted paper to be presented at Annual Meeting: 
    •  Required: Abstract as submitted/published in Annual Meeting Program 
    • Optional addition: a brief explanation (not to exceed 150 words) that outlines how the paper is influenced by and/or makes contributions to feminist approaches to the study of religion. 
  • Optional: Any additional information the applicant deems relevant to their application for the Plaskow travel grant (not to exceed 150 words)

Winner Notification and Expectations

  • The members of the AAR’s Annual Meeting Travel Grants Jury select the grant winner. When all other criteria are met equally, the jury will select the application that most closely corresponds to the spirit of Judith Plaskow’s work. 
  • Notification of application status is typically made by late June.
  • The grant winner will receive complimentary registration to the November Annual Meeting. 
  • The award of $500 USD will be distributed via electronic wire transfer to the grantee. The awardee needs to have a bank account that accepts wire transfers in order to receive the grant.
