Talk with Displaced Syrians or Iraqis Abroad

Sign up to use the Shared Studios Portal outside the Sheraton Boston at the 2017 AAR Annual Meeting for a 30-minute small-group videoconference with displaced Syrians or Iraqis abroad who would like to talk with AAR members. The AAR’s aim is to humanize the refugee crisis in ways that inspire members to better educate their students and the broader public about its religious dimensions.

On the mornings of Saturday and Sunday, November 18 and 19, the Portal will be Internet-connected live to two Portals overseas: one in Berlin, used by Syrian refugees, and another in Erbil, at a camp for internally displaced persons (IDPs) in Iraq.

Due to the sensitivity of the topic of religion, and given the potential vulnerability of our conversation partners abroad, the conversations will not focus specifically on religion. Instead, we will provide open-ended prompts that will spur conversations about our shared humanity (e.g., “What does home mean to you?”).

Regardless of whether you sign up for a Portal session, you are strongly encouraged to visit the Refugee Crisis Exhibit next to the AAR Booth in the Annual Meeting Exhibit Hall (open 8:30-5:30, Saturday through Monday in the Convention Center) as well as attend the plenary on the refugee crisis (A20-153), 9:00-11:30 AM, Monday, in Grand & Independence Ballrooms of the Sheraton (2nd Level).

This initiative is part of a larger AAR collaboration that includes two weeks of Portal conversations at Boston College and Harvard Divinity School between faculty/students and refugees/IDPs abroad. The initiative is inspired by a previous somewhat similar use of the Portal at the US Holocaust Memorial Museum.

Schedule your Portal appointment online at Pick any available time. Please sign up for only one slot and arrive 30 minutes ahead of your appointment for an orientation to conversation protocol. Out of respect for the people abroad who will be counting on you to show up for them, please do not schedule unless you are confident you can punctually honor your commitment.
