Membership Categories and Rates

Membership in the American Academy of Religion is on a calendar year, from January 1 to December 31. Reminder notices are sent out regularly urging members to renew before their membership expires on December 31 so that benefits will continue into the new calendar year. If you join or renew after January 1, current year AAR publications issued prior to your membership start date will be sent to you upon request.

Membership Categories & Eligibility

Sustaining and Supporting
Sustaining and Supporting members support the AAR through partially tax-deductible memberships. Learn how you can support your guild and experience the benefits!

Professional
This category is open to all those with a professional or scholarly interest in religion, theology, or cognate fields. A professional interest is defined by someone whose primary employment involves the critical exploration of the field broadly defined. A scholarly interest is defined by someone who is interested in religious and theological studies broadly defined whether or not the interest is a source of livelihood. Dues are based on annual income.

Student
This category is open to all those enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Student members pay a flat rate of $55 per calendar year for membership. Student memberships can be renewed for up to 10 years.

Retired
This category is open to any individual who is retired from one’s institution or place of employment. Dues are based on annual income.

Special International
International scholars working or residing outside those countries designated as high income by the World Bank may take advantage of a discounted rate of $15 per calendar year for membership, plus international postage. Members from the following countries are not eligible: United States, Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Czech Republic, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Korea, Luxembourg, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Kingdom. 

Membership Dues

AAR dues are based on gross annual income for the professional and retired categories:

There is a $20 postage fee for members who live outside the U.S.

Join or Renew Online
You enter all your demographic and payment information using AAR’s secure website. This is the most efficient and sustainable method of joining or renewing since it is paperless and requires less staff time to process.

Print a Membership Form PDF
You can print a membership form from the website, complete and return it with payment via postal mail or fax it to 1-404-727-7959. Please do not e-mail membership forms with payment information. In addition to credit cards, we accept money orders and checks.

Over the phone

Call the AAR office at +1-404-727-3049 to join the Academy over the phone using a major credit card.
