Frequently Asked Questions - Individual and Collaborative Research Grants
Can I apply for a research grant without an institutional affiliation?
Yes. AAR members who do not have an institutional affiliation and meet the grant eligibility requirements are welcome to apply for individual and/or collaborative research grants. Qualifications can be viewed on the AAR website at: https://www.aarweb.org/programs-services/grants-awards.
I have renewed my membership for the current year. I have had an AAR membership for the previous two years. Do I meet the three-year eligibility requirement?
No. Applicants must be current AAR members who have been in good standing for at least the previous three years. For example, if your AAR membership began by or before 2011, you would be eligible to apply for the research grant in 2014.
I am working on multiple research projects. Can I apply for more than one grant?
Yes. AAR members may submit more than one research grant proposal. If selected however, only one grant proposal will be funded to a recipient who submits multiple proposals.
Not all of our collaborative grant participants have received the doctorate. Are we still able to apply for a grant?

Not all of our collaborative grant participants are AAR members. Are we still eligible to apply for a collaborative grant?

Is there a limit to the number of participants in a collaborative research grant project?
No. There is no limit to the number of participants. Collaborative project proposals should include CVs of no more than two pages for each collaborator.
In addition to an AAR research grant, I am seeking funds from other institutions/agencies for my project. Do I need to include the other sources of funding in my budget proposal?
Yes. Please include information about any other sources of funding when submitting your research grant budget proposal.
Does the AAR allow for indirect or overhead costs to be included in the grant proposal budget?
No. The AAR does not allow for indirect or overhead costs for either the individual or collaborative research grant proposal budgets.
Is Research Assistance an allowable grant expense?
No. Research assistance is not an allowable grant expense. This includes graduate student assistance.

Yes! We encourage AAR members to reapply for a research grant if their proposal was not selected.
