Countering Islamophobia Workshop

Friday, November 16, 2018, 1:30pm -5:30 pm (5:30-6:30, private reception)

Caleb Elfenbein, Grinnell College, Presiding

This workshop will introduce participants to key themes in the study of Islamophobia, or anti-Muslim hostility, in the United States. Topics will include historical foundations, contemporary manifestations, and responses from within American Muslim communities. Participants will hear from scholars who study and resist anti-Muslim hostility and will work with other participants to explore concrete ways of teaching against Islamophobia in their own contexts.

The cost of attending the workshop is $30, which includes a coffee break and the entire afternoon of sessions. Registration is limited to the first 26 participants. Following the workshop, registered participants are invited to a private reception.

Caleb Elfenbein is an Associate Professor of Religious Studies and History, Grinnell College, whose current research focuses on the effects of anti-Muslim hostility on American Muslim participation in public life.
