Annual Meetings

At the Annual Meetings, hosted by the American Academy of Religion and the Society of Biblical Literature, scholars convene for the world's largest gathering of those interested in the study of religion. More than 1,000 events take place during the Annual Meetings, including a plethora of academic sessions, workshops, meetings, receptions, and tours. The Employment Center provides job seekers and employers a convenient, private setting for interviews. The Exhibit Hall, with more than 130 publishers, is the best place to review the latest publications within the field. At the Annual Meetings, there are unparalleled opportunities to engage with leading scholars and scholarship within the field of religion. 

General Information

Program Units

Program Units are the organizing research bodies that create the AAR's Annual Meeting program each year. The AAR has more than 150 Program Units—a number that reflects the diversity and interdisciplinarity of the field of religious studies.

Online June Sessions

The Annual Meeting June Sessions: Online will be June 25-27, 2024 and will have everything you expect from our traditional annual meetings, including nearly 80 sessions and a presidential panel.

Past and Future Meetings

The Annual Meeting takes place in a different host city every November and has events scheduled through 2025. Archives of select Calls for Papers, videoed sessions, and Program Books from past Annual Meetings are available.

Other Events

"Other Events" is the name given to events scheduled separately from the AAR and SBL programs and published in the Annual Meetings Program Book. Examples of Other Events include receptions, editorial board and business meetings, and breakfast and lunch gatherings.

Program Book Archive

The AAR Archives Collection is housed at Pitts Theology Library at Emory University and includes a digital archive of most past Program Books from 1938 to 2019.
