Annual Meeting Overview

The Annual Meetings are cohosted by the American Academy of Religion (AAR) and the Society of Biblical Literature (SBL), making it the largest yearly convention of scholars in the fields of religious studies and theology. Combined, there are over 1,000 academic sessions offered by the AAR, SBL, and other related scholarly organizations.

The sessions, breakfasts, and receptions at this year’s Annual Meetings will be held in the San Antonio Convention Center, Grand Hyatt, Hyatt Regency Riverwalk, Hilton Palacio del Rio, Marriott Rivercenter, and the Marriott Riverwalk. All locations are within walking distance of each other. Registration, the Exhibit Hall, and the Employment Center will be in the Convention Center.

See the hotels list and map for locations of the Annual Meetings events: https://www.aarweb.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/Annual_Meeting/2016/2016AMHotelMap%26Rates.pdf.

Floor plans for the Convention Center and hotels are here: https://www.aarweb.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/Annual_Meeting/2016/2016AMMapsFloorplans.pdf.

Program Book

The Program Book is your primary guide to all academic sessions, breakfasts and receptions, and additional meetings officially sponsored at the Annual Meetings. If you registered for the meeting prior to August 28, 2016, and elected to receive a printed program, you will receive your Program Book in the mail after October 1. If you registered after that date and would like a printed copy, you can pick up a Program Book, along with your tote bag, onsite in the registration area at the Convention Center.

Last minute changes to the program will be highlighted in the printed At-A-Glance supplement, which will be inside the tote bag that you pick up in the registration area.

You can search for sessions of interest in other ways, as well. The AAR has posted a searchable program book online where you are able to search for sessions by keyword and session type. Visit http://papers.aarweb.org/program_book.

The Annual Meetings Mobile App is the most functional and up-to-date way to search for specific topics, speakers, and program unit sessions. Read below for more information.

Mobile App

You can access the entire Annual Meetings program on your mobile device. With the mobile app, you can create and customize your schedule, make notes about sessions, search for participants, share your schedule with friends and colleagues, and get interactive information about exhibitors.

The app allows users to search for sessions by keyword, by participant, and by program unit. Schedule changes are downloaded in the background when Internet access is available. Download information for the 2016 Mobile App is here: https://www.aarweb.org/annual-meeting/mobile-app-at-the-annual-meetings.

Exhibit Hall

There are over 130 exhibitors in the Exhibit Hall this year, and many offer special discounts on books and items purchased during the Annual Meetings. Each exhibitor has a booth with representatives from the company or press. The Program Book contains the index of exhibitors and a map of the Exhibit Hall, which can also be found here: https://www.aarweb.org/sites/default/files/pdfs/Annual_Meeting/2016/2016AMExhibitorListandMap.pdf. An interactive map will be available on the mobile app.

Be sure to schedule some time to browse the Exhibit Hall—some book titles may not be available for purchase overseas. The Exhibit Hall will be located in the Convention Center, Exhibit Hall 1.

Getting Around San Antonio

There are several transportation options to travel between the airport and your hotel, as well as around downtown San Antonio.

Airport Transfers – San Antonio International Airport (SAT)

Metro Bus

Metro bus service is available to go downtown, but your hotel might not be along the direct route. Many passengers may have to walk up to a mile after riding the bus. Passengers will take the bus route 5 for $1.30. More information can be found here: http://www.sanantonio.gov/SAT/GroundTransportation/PublicTransportation.aspx.

Taxis

Taxi cabs are available at the lower level curbside, outside of baggage claim, at Terminal A. Fares to downtown start at $29, plus tip. More information, including taxi companies, can be found here: http://www.sanantonio.gov/SAT/GroundTransportation/Taxi.aspx.

Shared-Ride Car Service (such as Uber or Lyft)

San Antonio (SAT) is one of the airports that allows shared-ride services to pick up at the airport. The app will ask which location you’d like to be picked up at – B18, B19, or B20. Feel free to select any of these, as they are very close together. Upon exiting the airport, take a right and note the columns outside with the location on them, starting with A1, continuing past B1, to B20.

Shared-Ride Vans

The AAR and SBL are partnering with GO Airport Shuttle this year. Shared shuttle service is available 7 am–1:30 am daily. They are offering a discount price of $17 per one way trip or $30 per roundtrip. For questions only, you may call 210-281-9900. The discount is only available online or by reserving in person at the SAT airport upon arrival. Reservations can only be made starting in July 2016.

Go to http://saairportshuttle.hudsonltd.net/res?USERIDENTRY=SBLAA2016&LOGON=GO. Note that all hotels in the metropolitan area are listed. Use the guide below to get you to AAR and SBL contracted hotels. When you select Roundtrip, the first trip will come up at $17, and then after clicking Continue, the next page will be your outgoing trip for $13.

Status of People with Disabilities in the Profession Committee

AAR has a Committee on the Status of People with Disabilities in the Profession (PWD), which works to assure the full access of people with disabilities within the Academy and to advance their status within the profession. This year, the PWD Committee will co-sponsor three sessions:

  • “Intersectional Scholarship and Activism: A Conversation with Alison Kafer, Author of Feminist, Queer, Crip,” Sunday 9 to 11:30 am in Convention Center 224, co-sponsored with the Status of LGBTIQ Persons in the Profession Committee.
  • “Precarious Lives: Economy, Identity, and Luck in Contemporary Academia,” Sunday 1 to 3:30 pm in Convention Center 224, co-sponsored with the Academic Relations Committee, the Contingent Faculty Task Force, and the Status of Women in the Profession.
  • “Black Liberation Theologies of Disability,” Monday 9 to 11:30 am in Convention Center Stars at Night 4, co-sponsored with the Status of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession Committee.

The committee will host a luncheon, “Connecting Conversations,” on Monday 11:45 am to 12:45 pm in Convention Center 225A, immediately after the session on "Black Liberation Theologies of Disability.” Registration for the lunch costs $13 and is limited to 60 people. Advanced registration is required and can be done while you are registering online. If you have already completed registration, contact reg@aarweb.org.

The committee will also hold a pre-conference workshop, “Teaching Religion and Disability Studies: An Interactive Workshop on Curriculum & Pedagogy” on Friday, from 1 to 5 pm in Convention Center 209.  Registration for the workshop costs $35 and is limited to 35 people. Advanced registration is required and can be done while you are registering online. If you have already completed registration, contact reg@aarweb.org
