AAR Looks to the Future

Search for New Executive Director as Jack Fitzmier's Tenure Comes to a Close

March 2017

Jack FitzmierThe Board of Directors of the American Academy of Religion has begun the work to find a replacement for our Executive Director, Jack Fitzmier. Jack has ably served the AAR as its Executive Director for more than a decade, having begun his tenure in 2006.

As the long range planning process draws to a conclusion, Jack and the Board are pleased to announce that Jack will continue to serve as our Executive Director through the summer of 2018. During the next eighteen months, Jack will lead the implementation of the long range plan, make key staff appointments in our technology, communications, and outreach programs, and pave the way for the AAR’s ongoing vitality and success.

The Board of Directors is actively leading the search for the next Executive Director and intends to oversee a smooth leadership transition during the next two years.

The Board has engaged the services of a consulting firm to manage the search. The Board and the consultants will begin preliminary search work in the spring of 2017, and will formally launch the search in the summer of 2017. AAR membership will be broadly consulted throughout the search process. We hope that our new Executive Director will be in place by the summer of 2018. Jack will be available for consultation with his successor through June 30, 2019.
