AAR Board of Directors Approves New Guidelines

At its September 2018 and February 2019 meetings, the AAR Board of Directors approved two new sets of guidelines: Guidelines for Evaluating Digital Scholarship and Statement on Evaluating Scholarship in Religious Studies for Promotion and Tenure.

With the Guidelines for Evaluating Digital Scholarship, AAR joins other humanities societies, including the Modern Language Association, the American Historical Association, and the College Art Association, that provide disciplinary guidelines for the production and assessment of digital and media-based scholarly projects.

The Statement on Evaluating Scholarship for Promotion and Tenure encourages departments and evaluative bodies to remain committed to excellence in scholarship even as the field reconsiders what scholarship is, how it is shared, the communities it engages, and the economic contexts in which is it performed.

We encourage departments and decision-makers to refer to these guidelines as they consider their standards of scholarly merit.
