AAR Board Adopts New Professional Conduct Statement and Compliance Requirement for Annual Meeting Registration

Professional Conduct Statement
Over a year ago, the AAR Board commissioned a Professional Conduct Task Force to begin thinking anew about how members of our professional and scholarly community engage with one another. The Task Force was ably led by Su Yon Pak, staffed by Kecia Ali and Jack Fitzmier, and included Megan Goodwin, Barbara A. B. Patterson, David A. Sánchez, Randall Styers, Emilie M. Townes, and Melissa M. Wilcox.
The AAR Board received the final report of the Task Force at its winter 2018 meeting in Atlanta. The Board took three actions: First, it thanked the Task Force for its excellent work. Second, it adopted a very slightly revised version of the Task Force’s Statement on Professional Conduct. The Board hopes the Statement becomes a “living” document that is revised over time as our Academy grows and changes. And third, it commissioned a Board sub-committee, to be led by Vice President Laurie Patton and Executive Director Jack Fitzmier, to review all of our conduct related policies, notably our Sexual Harassment policies, with an eye toward updating and renewing them. The sub-committee will begin its work later this spring.
We commend the Professional Conduct Statement to our members. It may be found here
Compliance Requirement for Annual Meeting Registration
On the recommendation of the Task Force, the Board directed the AAR staff to take an additional step. Unlike many of its sibling societies in the ACLS, the AAR has not required annual meeting registrants, persons renewing their AAR membership, or persons joining the AAR for the first time to agree to comply with our stated policies while engaging in AAR sponsored events. Beginning with the registration process for the 2018 Annual Meeting in Denver (and later this year, with our Join and Renew processes) AAR members will be required to agree to the following statement:
[  ] By checking this box, I agree to abide by AAR policies during the AAR Annual Meeting.
By plainly stating our values, the policies based on those values, and the expectation that these will govern our professional conduct toward one another, we hope to strengthen our community as we move into the future.
