Contest Rules

Enter articles in one or more of three separate contests:

If your articles are opinion writing, enter them in that contest only.

Deadline: Must be received by February 28.

Award: In each contest, the first-place winner receives $1,000.

Eligibility:

News Articles in Print Media with Circulations over 100,000 or in Web Media;
News Articles in Print Media with Circulations under 100,000

  • Any topic related to religion, including but not limited to religion and art, bioethics or ethics, the courts, health, international or social issues, politics, popular culture, schools, or science.
  • Exactly five articles – not more than five and not less than five – published in North America during the previous calendar year. Five separate articles must be submitted for each contest entered: news articles in print media with circulations over 100,000 or in Web media; and news articles in print media with circulations under 100,000. (Non-English language articles are acceptable if translated into English; copies of articles in original language must be included with submission.)
  • Writing for general audiences and on a diversity of topics is preferred.
  • Writing should be the result of having benefited from the research or perspectives of scholars (though they do not need be mentioned or quoted).
  • You should be the sole author, except that up to two of the articles may have multiple bylines or credits, provided that you identify the articles and state that you did most of the writing.

Columns, Editorials, and Other Opinion Writing

  • Any topic related to religion, including but not limited to religion and art, bioethics or ethics, the courts, health, international or social issues, politics, popular culture, schools, or science.
  • Exactly three – not more than three and not less than three – articles published in North America during the previous calendar year. Three separate articles must be submitted for the columns, editorials, and other opinion writing contest. (Non-English language articles are acceptable if translated into English; copies of articles in original language must be included with submission.)
  • Writing for general audiences and on a diversity of topics is preferred.
  • Writing should be the result of having benefited from the research or perspectives of scholars (though they do not need be mentioned or quoted).
  • You should be the sole author, except that one of the articles may have multiple bylines or credits, provided that you identify the article and state that you did most of the writing.

Format:

  • Using 8.5"×11" sheets, provide photocopies or computer printouts of articles. Remove byline, identifying newspaper name and photo credits.
  • Consecutively number each page of entire entry; e.g., 1 being the first page of the first article and 15 being the last page of the last article.
  • In cover letter, include the following:
    • contest being entered;
    • contestant’s name, email address, and phone number;
    • publication name;
    • headline and date of each article.

Entry Fee: (USD)$25 per contest; check or money order, payable to American Academy of Religion, or credit card. To pay by credit card, please include the following in your cover letter:

  • credit card type (American Express, Discover, MasterCard or Visa)
  • credit card number
  • expiration date (mm/yy)
  • CID (card identification number: 4 digits on front of AmEx; 3 digits on back of other cards)
  • cardholder name
  • cardholder signature
