Steve is Director of External Relations. He leads an initiative on online scholarly networking, oversees media relations, and handles government relations, including facilitating access to religion expertise by law enforcement officials and government directors of prison chaplaincy programs. He also serves as the staff liaison to the AAR’s Committee on the Status of Racial and Ethnic Minorities in the Profession, its Public Understanding of Religion Committee, and its Religion in the Schools Task Force.

He is Founding Director of Religionsource, an AAR online referral service for journalists seeking academic sources on specific religion topics, which annually responds to some one thousand requests from journalists. He has been on the AAR staff since 1994.

He has more than twenty years of experience in nonprofit work, including a decade at Amnesty International USA, where he served as director of its Southern Region. For several years, he managed small businesses. Early in his career, he was a public secondary school teacher.

He holds a master’s degree in public administration from Harvard’s Kennedy School, where he concentrated on the nonprofit sector, and a master’s degree in political science from Clark Atlanta University, where he concentrated on religion and law. He recently completed a University of Massachusetts at Amherst graduate course on strategic management of technological innovation and is working on a University of Virginia master’s degree in managing information technology.
